Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my drain keep clogging even after I clear it?
Recurring clogs usually mean the real problem wasn’t fully addressed. Common causes include partial blockages left downstream after a snaking, pipe scale or grease buildup that keeps accumulating, root infiltration in the sewer line, or a venting problem that causes slow drainage. Camera inspection is the only reliable way to find out what’s actually happening in the pipe.
What's the difference between drain snaking and hydro-jetting?
Drain snaking uses a flexible metal cable to mechanically break up or pull out blockages. It’s effective for most clogs and is the standard first approach. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water — up to 4,000 PSI — to blast away grease buildup, mineral scale, and root fragments, leaving the pipe walls clean. Hydro-jetting is more thorough but not appropriate for fragile or damaged pipes.
How do I know if I have a main sewer line blockage vs. a single drain clog?
If only one drain is slow or clogged, it’s likely an isolated issue in that branch line. If multiple drains in your home are slow, backing up, or if flushing a toilet causes water to appear in the tub or sink, you almost certainly have a main sewer line blockage. This requires professional clearing — don’t keep using plumbing until the main is clear.
Are tree roots really a common problem in Duluth and Superior?
Yes. Older Twin Ports neighborhoods have mature trees with extensive root systems — and many homes have clay tile or cast iron sewer lines that are decades old. Roots find cracks or loose joints in these lines and grow into the pipe, causing slow drainage and eventually complete blockage. Root clearing needs to be done mechanically or with targeted chemical treatment — store-bought drain cleaners do nothing against roots.
Can I use chemical drain cleaner between professional cleanings?
We don’t recommend it. Store-bought drain cleaners are corrosive and can damage pipe joints, seals, and older metal pipes over time. They also don’t solve the underlying cause of most clogs — they just temporarily dissolve some organic material. If you need to clear a drain between service calls, a plunger or a manual drain snake is a safer option. Call us if the problem persists.
