AC Stopped Working in Minnesota? Here’s What to Do

Stay Calm: Some AC Problems Have Simple Fixes

When your air conditioner stops working in the middle of a Minnesota heat wave, the instinct is to panic and call for emergency service immediately. Sometimes that’s the right move, but there are a handful of common causes that you can check yourself in five minutes before calling a tech.

Start with your thermostat. Make sure it’s set to COOL and that the set temperature is lower than the current room temperature. Check that the fan setting is on AUTO, not OFF. Then check your circuit breaker panel, find the breaker labeled for your AC or air handler and see if it’s tripped. If it is, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call a professional; a repeatedly tripping breaker indicates an electrical problem that needs a trained technician.

Dirty Filter: The Most Common Reason for AC Failure

A severely clogged air filter is one of the most common reasons air conditioners stop cooling properly, or stop working entirely. When the filter is too dirty to allow adequate airflow, the evaporator coil gets cold enough to freeze over. Ice forms on the coil, blocks airflow completely, and the system either shuts down on a safety switch or blows warm air.

If you haven’t changed your filter recently, turn the system off (leave the fan on if your thermostat allows it) and let the coil thaw for a few hours. Replace the filter, then restart the system. If it cools normally after that, you found your problem. If it ices up again, there’s likely a separate refrigerant or airflow issue that requires a service call.

What Might Be Wrong: Common AC Failures

If the simple fixes don’t solve the problem, a few common mechanical failures could be at play. Capacitor failure is probably the most frequent AC repair in Minnesota, the capacitor stores electrical charge to help start the compressor and fan motors, and they degrade over time. A dead capacitor means the outdoor unit runs but the compressor doesn’t start, or vice versa. This is a relatively inexpensive fix when caught quickly.

Refrigerant leaks prevent the system from cooling and require a licensed technician to diagnose and repair, handling refrigerant is regulated by the EPA and requires certification. Contactor failure, thermostat issues, and compressor problems round out the list of common AC failures.

How to Stay Cool While You Wait for Repairs

If professional service isn’t immediately available, there are practical steps to keep your home bearable. Close blinds and curtains on the sunny side of your home to reduce solar heat gain. Run ceiling fans to circulate air, fans don’t cool the air, but the moving air makes you feel cooler. Minimize heat-generating activities like cooking and running the dryer during the hottest part of the day.

For vulnerable household members, elderly relatives, young children, or anyone with respiratory or heart conditions, consider a trip to a library, mall, or cooling center during extreme heat until repairs are complete. Minnesota’s summers may be short, but extreme heat days are genuinely dangerous for high-risk individuals.
