Yes, if it is a cold-climate rated unit and you keep the furnace you already own. A heat pump does not burn anything. Do heat pumps actually work below zero?

Cold-climate models do, at temperatures far below what most people assume. The technology moved considerably in the last decade, and units built for northern climates are not the ones your neighbor complained about in 2005.

The honest caveat is that “it still produces heat” and “it keeps up with your whole house” are different claims. The first is about the equipment. The second is about your house, and the balance point is what answers it. Ask for the manufacturer’s rated heating capacity at low outdoor temperatures for the exact unit being quoted. Can I keep my furnace?

You are not choosing between them. You are using each where it is strongest.

That also answers the question underneath the question, usually some version of “what if it cannot keep up.” You do not give up your heat source. The furnace stays exactly where it is. Will it actually cost less to run?
