Your furnace is being told to stop. Something is either a safety control doing exactly what it was designed to do, or a thermostat reading a temperature the rest of the house never sees.
That distinction matters more than the symptom does. A furnace short cycling because a limit switch keeps tripping has a real airflow problem behind it. A furnace short cycling because the thermostat sits above a supply register has a location problem.
Either way it burns more gas than it needs to and wears out the ignition components faster, because startup is the hardest part of every cycle. It is usually a warning rather than a failure, and warnings are cheap to act on.
Why Short Cycling Shows Up First in September

Five months of dust settles in the burner compartment and on the flame sensor. That residue is the single most common trigger behind a furnace that lights, runs briefly, and quits.
There is also a memory problem. A furnace that short cycled last March will short cycle again in September, and by then nobody remembers it did that. It reads as a brand new failure.
Cool September nights make it harder to spot, too. Short run times are normal when the house barely needs heat, so a real fault can hide inside behavior that looks fine. Watch what it does on the first genuinely cold morning.

Does a dirty filter really cause short cycling?
Yes, and it is the most common cause on the list. Restricted return air lets the heat exchanger run hotter than it should, the high limit switch trips, and the burners shut off while the blower keeps running to cool things down.
The tell is that blower behavior. If the burners quit but the fan runs on for a while afterward, look at the filter first.
Pull it out. If it is grey and matted rather than white and open, you found it, and this one is a homeowner fix that costs a few dollars.
Could my furnace be too big for the house?
An oversized furnace satisfies the thermostat before the system ever reaches steady state, so it never completes a full cycle. It heats the air near the thermostat fast and shuts off.
This is common in older Superior and Duluth homes where a replacement furnace was sized off the old unit’s nameplate instead of off the house.
The symptom pattern is distinctive. It has always done this, and the house still feels drafty and uneven despite having plenty of heat available. That is a sizing conversation for replacement time, not a repair.
What does a bad flame sensor look like?
The burners light, run for a few seconds, then shut off, and the whole sequence repeats a set number of times before the control board goes to lockout.
A flame sensor coated in carbon cannot prove that flame is present. The board does not guess, so it closes the gas valve. That is the safety system working correctly.
Cleaning a flame sensor is standard tune-up work, not a major repair, and it is one of the most common things we do in September.
Is the thermostat location part of the problem?
A thermostat in direct sun, mounted above a supply register, or hung on an exterior wall reads a temperature no other room in the house is experiencing. It calls for heat and cancels early.
Loose or corroded thermostat wiring does something that looks identical. Intermittent calls for heat produce intermittent runs.
Quick check you can do free. Does the short cycling stop once the sun moves off that wall in the afternoon? If so, you have narrowed it considerably.
Is short cycling dangerous or just annoying?
Most causes are wear and efficiency problems, not safety problems, and we would rather say that plainly than manufacture alarm about it.
The exceptions are real, though. Repeated lockouts, a burning smell that does not clear, or a furnace tripping a limit switch on every single cycle all deserve a technician the same day.

When to Stop Resetting It and Call Us
The line is simple. Change the filter and check the thermostat once. If the furnace still short cycles after that, it is a diagnostic, not a project.
Resetting a furnace at the breaker clears the lockout without touching whatever triggered it. Do that enough times and you are running the equipment straight through the safety that was trying to protect it.
